Christmas Table

A beautiful Christmas table does not depend on how many decorations are placed on it. What matters most is the coherence of the whole and the space left for the people sitting around it. At Anna & Moi, we like tables that feel warm, elegant and, above all, practical during a real meal.

With Anna, we quickly learned that a table that is too fragile or overloaded does not last very long. You need to be able to put down serving dishes, move a glass, let a child sit comfortably and keep talking without worrying about disturbing the decoration. Table linen becomes the perfect foundation.

1. Start with the tablecloth

The tablecloth covers the largest visual area, so it immediately sets the tone. A natural shade such as ecru or linen creates a bright base. Burgundy, deep green or rust gives the table more character.

If your table looks beautiful naturally, you can also choose a table runner or leave part of the wood visible. The aim is to create a coherent base, not necessarily to cover the entire table.

2. Coordinate napkins without chasing a perfect colour match

Cloth napkins instantly make a table feel more considered. They can match the tablecloth, but they do not have to. A complementary or slightly deeper shade often adds more depth.

Fold them simply or tie them with string, a sprig of greenery or a small name tag. There is no need to overcomplicate things: the textile already does much of the work.

3. Choose one colour palette for the whole table

To avoid a catalogue look, keep to two main colours and, if you like, a small metallic or luminous accent.

• Ecru + deep green: natural, calm and easy to live with.
• White + midnight blue: bright and wintry.
• Linen + burgundy: warm and classic without feeling too traditional.
• Terracotta + copper: welcoming and more contemporary.
• Beige + gold: simple, soft and festive.

4. Build a centrepiece that lets guests see one another

The centrepiece should accompany the meal, not get in the way. Keep it low and relatively narrow. A few candles, branches, greenery or small decorations are enough. Avoid tall arrangements that force people to lean sideways to talk.

If you plan to serve several dishes in the centre, leave room from the beginning. A Christmas table is first and foremost a table where people eat.

5. Make the table work for children

When Anna joins the meal, we keep things simple: no fragile decorations within easy reach and enough space around her place setting. A table can remain elegant while still working for real family life.

To involve children, let them prepare one small element: a place card, a simple napkin fold or a natural decoration. The table then becomes a memory of preparing together too.

Mamimosa’s advice: prepare table linen before Christmas Eve

If your tablecloth is new, follow the care label and prepare it before the big day. A first wash may be recommended depending on the fabric, but always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. For a tablecloth you already use, check it a few days beforehand so there is time to treat a stain or iron it.

After the meal, do not leave a stain for several days. Dab it quickly if needed, avoid rubbing hard and adapt the treatment to the fabric. A well-cared-for tablecloth can accompany many family meals.

Which tablecloth size should you choose for Christmas?

Measure the tabletop before buying. For a nice drop, add enough fabric on each side according to the look you want and the table shape. Also check whether you will add extension leaves for Christmas dinner: that is often when the usual tablecloth suddenly becomes too short.

An elegant Christmas table without buying everything again

Start with what you already own: tableware, glasses, candle holders, trays or natural elements. Add only the linen or small details that bring real coherence. A well-chosen tablecloth and beautiful napkins can be enough to completely refresh the atmosphere.
