The board game is waiting on the coffee table, mugs are being filled, and someone has already claimed the best spot on the sofa. A cosy family evening does not need a complicated plan. A few thoughtful touches can make everyone want to settle in together.
At Anna & Moi, we love evenings that unfold at their own pace, when the living room becomes a place to catch up, laugh and simply enjoy one another’s company. Here is our recipe for a comfortable night in.
1. Make room for everyone on the sofa
Keep a couple of soft throws within reach, so nobody has to get up when the evening turns chilly. You can even spread one out on the floor to create an extra spot for a film or game.
A few cushions make it easier to sit back or curl up comfortably. Leave enough room to move around, pass the snacks and pull up another seat. A welcoming living room should feel lived in, not untouchable.
2. Share something delicious
Homemade hot chocolate turns a simple evening into a little ritual. Warm your preferred milk gently, stir in some chocolate and let everyone add a pinch of cinnamon or a few marshmallows if they wish.
Put mugs, napkins and a few treats on a tray before everyone settles down. That way, you spend less time going back and forth to the kitchen and more time enjoying the conversation.
3. Create gentle lighting that still works for games
Dim the main light and switch on a smaller lamp near the sofa. A string of LED lights can add a festive touch without feeling out of place outside the holidays. Keep the table well lit if anyone wants to read, play cards or tackle a puzzle.
There is no need for a room full of decorations. A few comfortable seats, soft light and a blanket close by already create a lovely invitation to stay.
4. Let everyone have a say in the evening
Start with a quick card game, choose a board game that different ages can enjoy, or pick a film together. If everyone has different preferences, take turns choosing the activity from one family evening to the next.
Often it is the unplanned moments that stay with you: a funny house rule, a story told between turns or a burst of laughter that stops the film. Leave a little space for those moments instead of organising every minute.
5. Think about comfort all the way through
Before you begin, make sure there is an extra seat if needed, a place to rest each mug and a throw for anyone who wants one. Our guide to choosing a throw for autumn and winter can help you decide what suits your home and habits.
Once everybody is settled, the rest can happen naturally. Real comfort is not only about the things around us, but also the people we share them with. So bring out the throws, pour the hot chocolate and enjoy the evening.
What little family tradition makes an ordinary night feel special in your home?
